AQUALUMA, a local Gold Coast manufacturer has been leading the world in underwater lighting since 2004. Local brothers, Carl and Grant Amor established AQUALUMA in Helensvale with the sole objective of manufacturing the best underwater lighting in terms of performance, quality and functionality. You may have noticed the smart new factory, just off the motorway at Helensvale.

The AQUALUMA range of LED underwater lighting is the only light on the market that is designed and manufactured in Australia and offers the world’s only six year housing warranty.

The company has won numerous awards for its innovation, environmental focus and as a well-established local family business; the latest being The Premier’s Export Award for an ‘Environmental Solution’ in late 2016.

The Thru-hull range of LED lights is suitable for all craft from tinnies through to luxury motor yachts. The range is also ideal for any type of hull construction, including aluminium, steel, wood and GRP.

There is a range of sizes and brilliant colour options to suit owners’ specific needs, the key point of difference with AQUALUMA lights in addition to the 6-year unconditional warranty, is the ability to service, maintain and upgrade the light without the need to lift the boat out of the water after initial installation.

The unique patented housing is made from a corrosion proof, high-impact polymer material, which makes it virtually indestructible. If you want to upgrade in the future as LED technology improves to the latest model or you want different colours, all Thru-hull models are upgradable, again without the need to haul the boat out of the water.

AQUALUMA also manufactures a range of surface-mounted underwater lights for smaller runabouts and trailer boats, these are available in two colours and ideal for boats that are not kept permanently in the water. There is also a high-resolution colour CCTV camera that can be used to monitor underwater fittings, allow fishermen to see their catch or just for the kids to watch the fish on a TV screen!

Above the waterline

AQUALUMA Industrial & Commercial Highbay LED Lighting

It may come as no surprise that the leader in marine underwater LED lighting is also a world leader in energy efficient LED lighting for commercial premises. AQUALUMA manufacturers the world’s most energy efficient commercial LED lighting. Building on its experience in the demanding marine environment, in 2010 AQUALUMA diversified into the Commercial and Industrial lighting market and now manufacturers a range energy-efficient Highbay LED light fixtures for manufacturing, warehouse, ‘big box’ retail and outdoor environments.

A focus on innovation has seen the company produce world leading energy efficiencies, making a change over from old metal halide lights not only provides a very quick payback, with a reduction in running costs of over 70% but importantly a much improved working environment. The range carries a 7-year warranty and is waterproof to IP66, meaning that they can be used outdoors in carparks, as flood lighting, for sports facilities and general outdoor areas.

With innovation as the driver of the business, you can be sure there is always a pipeline of new products due to come to market; this month AQUALUMA is launching a new Food-grade LED canopy light for food manufacturing and processing environments.

If you would like more information on how this exciting local manufacturer of the world’s best LED lighting can enhance your leisure boating or business, contact AQUALUMA directly on info@aqualuma.com; call 1300 145 555 or visit www.aqualuma.com.

In recent years drones have evolved from novelty toys into an essential device for bringing aerial photography into the hands of the general public. Instead of being stuck with awkward selfies from your phone, drones let boaties capture the sort of amazing aerial shots that were previously only possible with a helicopter. However, photography was only the beginning, as we’re now seeing drones revolutionise fishing, both above and below the water line, and there’s even talk of drones helping save people who have fallen overboard. Let us show you some of the most useful drones for boating.

Splash Drone

Price: $1,660

It is possible to get cheap camera drones for under a hundred dollars, but you will need to buy them by the dozen considering they sink without a trace when they hit the water. The Splash Drone was the first waterproof drone to hit the market – an essential feature for any serious boating use. It is also one of the most versatile drones on the market, with the ability to attach a wide range of devices. The most obvious attachment is a GoPro camera for filming. However, the drone can carry up to 1kg, making it possible to carry life vests to people overboard much further than you could throw, or to carry flares higher up to increase their visibility. Another very handy feature is that if the drone loses its connection to your controller, it will automatically return to its take-off coordinates. It is also possible to modify the Splash Drone to carry fishing equipment. Such a broad range of customization and features make the Splash Drone a great all-rounder. However, it will quickly get very expensive if you want all the attachments, so it’s worth looking at other choices if you just have a specific use in mind.

Aguadrone

Price: $1,790

Drone fishing has rushed from concept to reality in just a couple of years, and it is easy to see why when you realise the possibilities with the technology. You may have seen the popular YouTube videos earlier in the year of two local fishermen catching a huge 20kg tuna off Fingal Head by using a drone to carry a baited hook 350m out into the ocean then reeling the tuna back in with a rod. The Aguadrone is specifically made for fishing and will let you do everything they did and more. The drone is fully waterproof and it comes with a range of accessories you can twist on and off without tools. As well as a camera capable of filming above and below the waterline, it comes with two main fishing accessories: the fish finder and the main fishing pod. The fish finder uses sonar to check the water’s depth, temperature and find fish down to 40m, and all of this information is sent to your smartphone in real-time. The main fishing pod can carry your bait, hook and sinker (up to a weight of 2kg) out to the fish. You can watch a camera view of below the drone and then detach the bait as soon as you spot the fish.

Trident

Price: $1,200

For those who want to explore the ocean depths without getting wet, the Trident packs in a lot cutting-edge features. It is capable of travelling to a depth of 100m, while shooting HD footage that it sends back to your laptop or smartphone. The Trident is also built very strongly to withstand water pressure and collisions. And to get around the difficulty of sending data wirelessly through the water, it is tethered to a floating WiFi transmitter. Unless you are a professional treasure hunter, the Trident may be a very niche device. But it’s undeniably fascinating.

The 14-psi pressurized dry nitrogen sealed inside the optics makes the binoculars fog-free in any conditions, from arctic to desert heat. Don’t worry about breaking them either. The polycarbonate rubber armouring is built to withstand 11Gs of impact. www.opticscentral.com.au

MORO DECONTO LURES (AUSTRALIA)

South American pro anglers just slipped their best-kept secret and ever since we keep being smashed cast after cast. The original twitch bait “Biruta” and Soft “Laguninha” Prawns are now available in a great variety of sizes and exclusive colours with great stats on the semi- transluscents. Though weighted, these handcrafted Biruta twitch baits float (and rattle) as they are hollow but sink as you start twitching/walking the dog with them due to their clever shape and the weight under the head section making them ideal for rock and reef. The moment you think you are about to get snagged, release the tension and it floats avoiding snags and costly losses. The Laguninha are just as effective, and come in a variety of sizes and colours and are just a little tougher than the rest resulting in a longer lifespan affording you that big one as opposed to rebaiting and calming the frenzy. Snapper season is going to be epic this year. Contact Eduardo Henze down in Tweed to get in on it. They really work. morodecontoaustralia.com.au

COOPER ANCHORS

With an anchor for every size vessel—from kayaks, PWCs, tinnies, tenders or inflatables all up to 6.5 m in length, Cooper Anchors convincingly takes the prize every time as they are smaller, lighter and more affordable. Inflicting less damage to both your craft and the reef than any of its counterparts, they are made from nylon which will therefore also not rust, rot or corrode. By no means feather-paper weight either, these anchors bury themselves effortlessly in the sea bed and stay there even through wind and tide changes. The small area between the shank and the tip allows Cooper Anchors to change direction with less effort, especially during anchor retrieval. As the boat is pulled forward, over and above the anchor, the anchor rotates with the vertical pull and is easily retrieved. These blokes (the Coopers from Hervey Bay) have made dropping anchor (and more so retrieving it) an absolute pleasure. Check them out at cooperanchors.com.au.

FREEZE DRIED BAIT

The name says it all. Packed in heavy-duty UV-proof bags, and with nitrogen flushing, the bait remains perfectly preserved for more than three years. When it’s time to fish, simply rehydrate the bait in fresh or salt water. This will happen in around six minutes (or as long as it takes to rig a rod) in the zip-lock packaging pouch, resulting in a bait with a desirable and slightly rubbery texture. No need to keep bait refrigerated or frozen; eskies and freezers are free for essentials. It lasts infinitely longer than fresh bait, three-plus years! Store it anywhere, throw a bag in the glovebox, briefcase or back pack or leave it on your boat. It is light weight, approximately 70% lighter than fresh bait, let alone a frozen block. This is by far the cleanest alternative with less mess and smell, and fish absolutely love it. Available in whole baby squid and squid pieces at BCF, Anaconda, Whitworths and motackle.com.au. We love it! www.freezedriedbait.com

KOMBO

“It Bonks, It Scoops, It Cuts and Sharpens”

KOMBO Fishing Tool is a first 4-in-1 fishing multi-tool for fishing. Reduce the amount of gear you’re packing, this multi-tool works as a fish “bonker”, a scooper, and a sharpener, and hides a high-quality stainless steel fillet knife inside its plastic body, using a patent-pending locking mechanism to keep it from sliding out accidentally. The all in one easy-to-use tool also floats! Keeps your tackle box clutter-free. Made from a high grade plastic. Has a chef’s quality, stainless steel fillet knife. High visibility, tough construction! ($55) www.gearzone.com.au

FISHHUNTER

Now available for Australia, FishHunter™ is the most advanced portable sonar and fish finder app for Android and iOS devices that communicates by Bluetooth. FishHunter also provides ease-of-use, rugged construction, portability, and comprehensive feature set. FishHunter™ SONAR communicates via Bluetooth, while floating in water sending detailed information back to an Android and iOS device with speed and precision. Using the most advanced mapping available to create GPS-based fishing spots, a catch functionality allowing for extensive log-book creation, including bait used, fish photos and catch size and species. Pre-trip planning tools ensure best moon forecast, and short and mid-term weather forecasts. A fish database identifies different species of fish, tips on best hiding places and bait to use. With social network capability and in-app photo comp. www.fishhunter.com

The advent of LED lighting has sparked something of a revolution in the marine industry, signalling a bright and colourful future for boat owners who like to spend as much time as possible on the water.

At the forefront of this quantum leap forward in technology is the US manufacturer Lumitec Lighting, whose range is distributed exclusively throughout Australia by the experienced team of marine professionals at Australian Marine Wholesale.

Managing director Errol Cain says that Light Emitting Diode (LED) lights are much more modern in their design, use far less electricity and have a longer life span than traditional incandescent bulb lights, making them a very attractive option for both new boat owners and those refitting their vessels.

“With various wattages, they have a vast array of on-board applications spanning everything from underwater lights, utility, mood and courtesy lights to deck lights, flood lights and spreader lights,” he says.

Over 30 years in the marine industry, Errol has fitted evolving technology to thousands of vessels – from super yachts to sailing yachts, trawlers to trailer boats – and he has built up a wealth of knowledge and experience.

He says Lumitec, founded in 2007, is continuing to define the LED lighting landscape in terms of performance, reliability and quality.

“In 2016, Lumitec is adding an exciting new range of lighting options for boat owners,” says Errol. “The Seablaze SpectrumX underwater lights, for instance, offer nearly infinite colour output options and user-selectable modes, easy surface-mount, two-wire hookup and no external control boxes.

“The entire Spectrum range puts every colour of the rainbow right at your fingertips so boat owners can make their vessels really stand out in a marina and also breathe life into spectacular, private night-time aquariums.”

Errol says that with thousands of hours of maintenance-free use and low electrical current draw, Lumitec boat lights such as the full-colour Mirage Spectrum, Halo Spectrum and Orbit Spectrum are ideal for both interior and exterior overhead boat lighting.

“Lumitec’s class-leading flood lights and spreader lights also surpass all the competition,” he says. “These products are used on many of the finest boats and yachts in the world, and such is their reliability that they are also used by emergency services and the US Special Forces.

“The new Zephyr spreader light is equally well suited to lighting the foredeck of an elegant sloop or the cockpit of a luxurious sport yacht. Mounted on spreaders, spars, radar arches, towers and flybridges at a mounting height of 16 feet, this spreader light brightly illuminates an area nearly 24 feet in diameter with more than 1000 lumens.

“A lumen is standard unit of light as it is perceived by the human eye. Essentially, it will tell you how bright something is, unlike a watt, which is actually a measurement of energy consumption or output.

“Whether you are replacing an antiquated halogen light or installing a high-powered deck flood light, Lumitec’s LED lights yield thousands of hours of superior output in any weather conditions.”

Also new for 2016 are the Octane LED tower/spreader 1000-lumen lights for wakeboarding boats, offering style, refinement, meticulous design and amazing performance. “The appeal of this light starts long before it is even turned on, but when it’s on, it’s definitely on,” says Errol. “Its 1000 darkness-piercing lumens will get you to the party, and back, safely.”

The CapreraLT and CapriLT flood lights also each output 1000 lumens and have been rigorously tested for shock and vibration, water ingress, impact, weatherability, electromagnetic radiation and overall durability.

“In short, they offer exceptional value in extreme environment LED flood lighting,” says Errol. “And for applications where durability, reliability and performance are non-negotiable, Lumitec has designed the new 1000-lumen Diesel range which is proving its mettle on everything from swamp buggies to forklifts, to off-road vehicles.”

Customers with high expectations, from the world’s top custom yacht builders to the US Coast Guard, have relied on Lumitec’s Maxillume line of flood lights for nearly a decade. New for 2016 is the Maxillume h60, with the tried and tested Lumitec dimmer control, packing more than 6000 lumens and boasting twice the output of previous models.

“For the roughest of seas and toughest of jobs, the Maxillume h120 outputs 12,000 lumens and is housed in a heavy duty aluminum casing – this light is also tested to withstand vibration and shock and is completely water sealed.”

Errol and the experienced Australian Marine Wholesale team help boat owners every day to navigate what can be a minefield of information to ensure they get exactly what they need, at the right price.

But the service goes much further than that.

“Before we recommend a product to our customers, we listen and learn how they use their boats so we can ensure they get exactly what they need without paying too much for something they may never even fully use, or perhaps recommend a better alternative,” says Errol.

“Quite often people who buy elsewhere come to us to help sort out issues with their equipment and it’s then that they see what really sets Australian Marine Wholesale apart – we not only source, supply, install and calibrate the most reliable accessories and equipment ourselves, we also educate our customers to ensure they enjoy the full features of their purchase, and this is a key at the core of our philosophy.”

The extensive suite of leading-brand products distributed through Australian Marine Wholesale testifies to these long-established links: Raymarine, Garmin, Iris Innovations, Icom, Simrad, Lumitec, Aqualuma, Fusion, Clarion, Mastervolt, and Blue Water Desalination, to name but a few.

“Our job at AMW is to ensure our customers receive great value from their investment and this is not something we take lightly,” says Errol.

Are you sick of barnacles on your boat? And what if you never had to anti-foul again? Well, the reality is that you do not have to. The Sea Pen will keep your boat’s hull clean and barnacle-free! And there is a Sea Pen suitable for every type of vessel from 5m to 30m.

Local company Dockpro have become one of the success stories of the Gold Coast marine industry with its Sea Pen and FloatBricks product lines.

The Gold Coast is the ‘home of Sea Pen’ and the first production Sea Pens went on display at the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show (SCIBS) in 2004, with the first sales going to local Gold Coast people. Although there have been many improvements along the way, the early-model Sea Pens are still in operation today, over 11 years later.

The Sea Pen is the world leader in water-level dry-docking technology and is a patented Australian-designed product that is also manufactured in the Gold Coast Marine Precinct at Coomera. Many Sea Pen clients are surprised and delighted to learn they are supporting a local manufacturing business.

The Sea Pen is very easy to use and many clients echo the sentiments of Kay from Mermaid Waters when she says, “The Sea Pen has been my/our saviour, from a boating relationship perspective as well as from the sheer ease of leaving the pontoon and returning to the pontoon in a very safe manner. I no longer need to hang off the side of the boat waiting to jump off to secure the boat with fenders and ropes.” No more frustration for Kay and her husband.

For those of you with smaller crafts, Dockpro have the FloatBricks modular docking system allowing owners of jet skis, tinnies and small to medium runabouts, offering the luxury of keeping their craft out of the water but ready to go at a moments notice. A High Density Polyethylene product line with above-industry standard UV stabilization, FloatBricks are built to last in the tough Australian environment.

Boating has gone beyond telescopes, charts and other traditional navigational instruments. Technology has quickly moved the boating world into a level where a small hand-held gadget does what a whole team of experts used to do. However, this is not saying that use of charts and our five senses are obsolete. In fact, all these have become much more important in a world that takes a lot for granted. On one hand, we should not ignore our natural instincts when dealing with the fickle ocean, and on the other hand, we also have to embrace what technology is offering for boaties. Balancing these two sets of aids will only make boating safer and more fun.

Navigating with a smartphone

These days, every boat owner must own a smart phone, and just about anyone with a smart phone has most likely had a crack at using Google or Apple navigation systems. They are vast and expansive systems and they have to be—I mean, these gigantic companies just went and mapped the planet, in its entirety, using satellites, a complicated task in itself, and in the process they added in some cool little features that may also seem complicated. However, with a little knowledge you can use these special services with less frustration and a lot more practicality. Here is my top three:

1. Offline maps (Google)

In Google, there is a handy little feature for those heading to remote areas where you may not get a signal. Maps rely heavily on Wi-Fi and cellular data signals in conjunction with your phone’s GPS to determine your position. Before you go out of range, you can download a relevant portion of the map by hitting the menu button and clicking ‘Make Available Offline’. This will allow you to save an area of up to 50km x 50km!

2. Share your location (Apple)

Meeting someone on the water? Try using your iMessage. In the iMessage conversation click on the ‘Details’ option on the top-right of the screen, then select ‘Share My Location’. It will then give you the option to share your location with this person in the conversation for a specific period: for one hour, until the end of that day, or indefinitely. Upon selecting an option, it will send that person a request for him/her to share locations with you (but only with their approval will it allow you to continue). So there you have it—no more confusing directions or missing seeing each other by five minutes.

3. Live Traffic (Google and Apple)

One of the handiest little features of both of these navigation programs is the ability to see what the road traffic is up to, making it easy to avoid any accidents of heavily congested streets—especially heading out to a busy boat ramp. To the boatie, this means you reach the water sooner. Both Google and Apple have unique ways of displaying this information. In both platforms, orange means slow moving traffic, and red means they are going nowhere. (Matt Jackson)

Disclaimer: The above tips do not imply that a boatie should not learn how to read charts, nor does it suggest that you use a smart phone instead of a marine radio. Boat Gold Coast encourages all boaties to learn to read navigational charts and to use a marine radio.

Malibu Wrist Control Band

Malibu’s new wrist control Surf Band is the latest product from innovation experts, Malibu Boats. Complementing, their already established and revolutionary Power Wedge II and Surf Gate wake products, the Surf Band allows you, the rider, to have complete control of the size and shape of the wake produced for maximum versatility. The power to adjust and finely tune the exact wake characteristics you want while riding is a unique advantage when it comes to perfecting certain manoeuvers without stopping and starting continuously.

Its slim-line design and simple tri-optional interface enables you to quickly change the wake’s size, shape, speed and length with minimal fuss and distraction depending on your tow needs. The Surf Band immediately manipulates the wake to your desired effect, while also informing your driver of your actions through the command centre.

Be a pro with GoPro

All the fuss with GoPro action shots may have convinced you to get a GoPro camera yourself. There is a world of GoPro models and options out there and you may think that picking the right one (in addition to what accessories are applicable to you) is the hardest part of owning a GoPro. You would be surprised that using a GoPro can be just as difficult as purchasing one.

Instant viewing. For starters, they can be hard to aim, especially if you have it mounted on something. Sometimes you can film an entire session only to get it home and realise that you have it pointed too high or low. Unless you fork out for the optional LCD backpack or the most expensive GoPro Black Edition, which comes standard with an LCD, you won’t know until you get home.

GoPro App. This brings me to the handiest free feature GoPro has to offer—and that is the GoPro app. Download the GoPro application on your smart phone, sync it with your GoPro via your phone’s Wi-Fi and voila! You have an instant live feed of all footage and complete remote control of your GoPro—not to mention the ability to review and delete said footage instantly. I cannot over-emphasise how easy and practical this app is for the GoPro user. With a range of up to 180m, you can focus on providing your best footage while leaving somebody else in charge of the filming.

A fisheye for an eye. Do not forget about the fish-eye effect of the GoPro. You may take an incredible photo of your surroundings thinking it will turn out amazing, only to find that you can hardly see a thing. GoPro’s are meant for close-up shots only. You can play around with the capture settings, edit the photos with the GoPro editing program, or modify the lens itself to reduce this effect, but they are still not great for distance photography.

It’s been more than three decades since Australian Marine Wholesale managing director Errol Cain started working in the field of marine electronics. But even today, he’s inspired by the myriad ways advancing technologies continue to make boating so much easier and more enjoyable.

“When I started Cain Marine in the 1980s, boat owners basically just had a VHF radio and digital depth-sounder…and that was it,” he says. “Today, the range of new features being integrated into state-of-the-art technology such as multi-function displays, for example, still manages to amaze me.

“More importantly, all this cutting-edge technology is enhancing the user experience for those of us who like to spend as much time as we can out on the water.”

Over 30 years, Errol has fitted evolving technology to thousands of vessels – everything from super yachts to sailing yachts, trawlers to trailer boats – and has built up a wealth of knowledge and experience.

Australian Marine Wholesale sources the best and most reliable technology from throughout the world in an effort to stay at the forefront of a rapidly advancing industry.
