As boaters, we are among the fortunate few who experience the ocean not as a destination, but as a way of life. Whether cruising Queensland’s coastline, exploring the Whitsundays, or making the journey north through Australia’s iconic cruising grounds, we witness firsthand the beauty and challenges facing our marine environment.
The International SeaKeepers Society, better known as SeaKeepers, is a global non-profit organisation that connects recreational boaters with ocean science, conservation, and education initiatives around the world. SeaKeepers South Pacific was launched as the organisation’s regional chapter to bring this mission closer to home, creating opportunities for boaters throughout the region to become active stewards of the ocean while doing what they love most – being on the water.
For the boating community, SeaKeepers South Pacific offers a unique opportunity to turn a passion for the ocean into tangible action. Through a network of scientific, educational, and conservation partnerships, boaters can play a role in expanding our understanding and protection of marine ecosystems.
That involvement is often easier than many expect. A cruising yacht may host a researcher for part of a voyage, assist with environmental monitoring, document wildlife sightings, or welcome students aboard for a day of marine education. By leveraging vessels already operating throughout the region, SeaKeepers helps transform routine time on the water into valuable opportunities for science and stewardship.
Australia’s cruising routes are home to some of the world’s most remarkable marine ecosystems. From the Great Barrier Reef and Coral Sea to coastal estuaries and offshore islands, these environments face increasing pressures from climate change, pollution, habitat degradation, and marine debris. Scientists often face logistical and financial challenges accessing these areas, particularly remote locations. The boating community is uniquely positioned to help bridge that gap.
GET INVOLVED WITH SEAKEEPERS
SeaKeepers South Pacific’s DISCOVERY Program connects researchers with vessels already operating in regions of scientific interest. By sharing available space aboard a vessel, owners and captains can directly support research projects ranging from coral reef monitoring and fisheries studies to marine mammal observations and oceanographic surveys.
To make participation accessible, SeaKeepers South Pacific maintains an online calendar of upcoming opportunities through a Program Opportunities webpage, including research missions, educational experiences, citizen science projects, community events, and cleanups taking place throughout Australia and the South Pacific. Vessel owners and captains can browse current activities and identify opportunities that fit their schedules, cruising routes, and interests.
BEYOND THE ORDINARY CRUISE
Beyond research, SeaKeepers is committed to fostering the next generation of ocean stewards. Through educational outreach programs, students gain rare opportunities to experience the marine environment firsthand, often aboard vessels that become floating classrooms. These experiences create lasting connections between young people and the ocean while inspiring future careers in marine science and conservation.
The organisation’s efforts also extend to citizen science initiatives, allowing recreational boaters to contribute observations and data during their regular voyages.
