EDGE eCOAT – ADVANCED NEW ENGINE ANODIZING PROCESS

Suzuki Marine has introduced Suzuki Edge eCoat, an advanced new engine anodising process designed to deliver superior corrosion protection for saltwater use while significantly reducing environmental impact. First introduced in August 2024 on Suzuki’s popular DF140B outboard, the technology has now expanded to the DF140BG, DF140B, DF115BG, and DF115B models, with plans for progressive adoption across Suzuki Marine’s global outboard lineup.

Developed by Suzuki Motor Corporation, the anodising process protects key engine components including the cylinder block, cylinder head, and crankcase. It is engineered to withstand high temperatures while providing enhanced corrosion resistance by uniformly coating cooling water passages and other components exposed to cooling water. As Suzuki outboards are widely used in bays, oceans, and harsh marine environments around the world, this added protection offers valuable long-term durability for boaters globally.

The Suzuki Edge eCoat process involves immersing aluminium components in an electrolytic solution and passing an electric current through them to form a porous aluminum oxide layer. By refining the immersion process to eliminate air pockets, Suzuki can uniformly treat the complex internal shapes of cooling water passages for improved protection.

Another major advantage is superior heat resistance. Suzuki uses a low-temperature sealing treatment with metal hydrates to close microscopic surface pores, helping maintain corrosion resistance even at temperatures up to 300°C. This is the first time such a treatment has been applied to mass-produced outboard engine components. The process also includes specialised protection for the cast iron sleeve integrated into the cylinder block. Suzuki developed dedicated sealing technology to prevent pitting during anodising, ensuring critical engine components remain protected throughout manufacturing.

In addition to improving durability, Suzuki Edge eCoat reduces CO2 emissions by approximately 50% compared with traditional treatment methods that required chemical treatment and paint baking processes.

This innovation supports Suzuki Marine’s broader sustainability initiatives under its CLEAN OCEAN PROJECT, which focuses on reducing the environmental impact of boating through technological advancement, waste reduction, and global conservation efforts. Suzuki continues to pursue innovations that enhance the boating experience while helping preserve marine environments for future generations.
