VOLVO PENTA – FUTURE HYBRID ELECTRIC BOATING

Volvo Penta and Groupe Beneteau have made significant strides in the hybrid electric boating sector, sharing key insights from a collaborative testing. The research aimed to gather data on consumer perceptions and experiences with hybrid-electric boats. The findings will assist in guiding the future of sustainable boating.

The Volvo Penta’s hybrid-electric system is integrated into a Groupe Beneteau leisure boat. A formal questionnaire, developed with a market research analyst, was used to capture actionable feedback. Over 50 guests, including 77% who identified as “expert” or “advanced” boaters, engaged in test drives and one-on-one interviews. Key findings revealed a high market readiness for hybrid-electric systems, with 72% of attendees expressing a high likelihood of choosing such a system for their next boat purchase.

Environmental and experiential interests were prominent among participants. Specifically, 47% were focused on reducing carbon emissions, with 19% interested in general environmental benefits. Additionally, 41% were drawn to new technology, 33% to silent operation, and 12% to features like reduced vibration and noise.

Performance feedback was overwhelmingly positive. The Joystick Docking system received “excellent” or “very good” ratings from 98% of testers. Living aboard the boat using batteries without a generator was rated highly by 95% of participants. Near-silent electric cruising impressed 88%, while 85% valued zero emissions at slow speeds. Electric boost acceleration was praised by 82% of testers, and 79% appreciated the ability to charge using the main combustion engines.

The hybrid-electric boat boasts impressive features, achieving a top speed of 35 knots, with electric-only cruising up to 10 knots. It is equipped with two Volvo Penta D4-320 engines and two 60 kW electric motors. Onboard batteries store 67 kWh, enabling off-grid living and access to protected areas. The Human Machine Interface (HMI) allows seamless switching between Electric, Hybrid, and Power modes. Advanced control features include the Volvo Penta Joystick Docking and Dynamic Positioning System for precise control.

Volvo Penta and Groupe Beneteau plan to continue leveraging these insights to drive the evolution of boating. Key areas of focus will include safety, charging infrastructure, pricing models, HMI interface enhancements, and overall comfort and experience.

Johan Inden, president of Volvo Penta’s marine business, emphasised the unprecedented nature of the research event and the valuable insights gained for shaping future boating experiences. Erik Stromberg, vice president of power and motor yacht products at Groupe Beneteau, highlighted the collaboration’s role in understanding market perceptions and the transformative potential of hybrid-electric technology.

This innovative collaboration marks a significant step towards more sustainable and intuitive boating experiences, aligning with evolving market needs and environmental goals.
