With a turnover of $2.57 billion in 2016-17 (31% of the national total), the Queensland boating industry sector has grown significantly into a respected global supply chain with highly skilled individuals.

In Queensland there are currently 380 active boating industry businesses, 694,000 boat licence holders, and more than 5,000 people directly employed by the industry. The state has enjoyed a 17% growth in registered boats in the past 10 years including 7,533 new boats registered in 2016-17 – 50% of the national total.

Queensland also hosts the peak cruising period for superyachts in Australian waters particularly around Northern Queensland during September to December each year. South East Queensland is a busy hub for superyacht maintenance.

On the Gold Coast the Gold Coast Marine Precinct (GCMP) is the major marine industry industrial area. The marine precinct is dedicated to the manufacture, service/repairs, and re-fits of recreational boats. Encompassing an area of around 250 hectares, the precinct has direct water access to Moreton Bay and the Pacific Ocean.

The Gold Coast also possesses strengths in high-value manufacturing of marine equipment. Accessory manufacturers are well recognised for their capability in a diverse range of hardware, accessories, lighting and dock flotation systems, with many Gold Coast products found within the build of yachts and marinas around the world.
